Reasons for writing primarily male rape fics: I happen to be very interested in how rape is perceived in our society. If I say ‘rape victim’ your mind probably conjures up a woman. I’ve found that statistically that’s not actually accurate. According to reports, men make up one sixth of sexual assaults. However, surveys have shown that sexual assault happens to men much more often than that. It shows that men and women are neck and neck as far as who gets raped more often. If you include prison rapes men get raped more than women. Rape has changed over the years and the rise in male rape is alarming, but female rape remains the same. Rape evolved over time. Men would rape women. Women were too ashamed to say anything and the rapist escaped punishment. Then women started saying something and the man said she was lying and that he had never even met her. Again, men were believed and the woman was forced to watch her rapist go free. DNA changed that. Men were still saying they hadn’t touched the woman, but now evidence proved otherwise. Rapists started going to jail. But that didn’t last. Men began admitting to sex, but said it was consensual. Again, rapists went free. Our current situation has the courts believing the victim more than they used to and things have started turning around again in our justice system. Men are going to jail for raping women even if they say it was consensual. Evidence collecting has gotten better and the implementation of SANE(Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) have brought about those changes. So now things have come full circle. Raping men is the newest trend because it closely resembles what used to be the case with women. Shame shocks into silence. Quite simply men don’t tell. My hope in writing male fanfics is that it becomes normalized a bit. If one man reads my story and finds comfort in the fact that not everybody thinks that it can never happen then maybe that’s what I’m trying to accomplish. Finding a way to take the shame off of male victims and put it back on the rapists is my ultimate goal. Okay…off of my soapbox now.
